According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a specialized branch of the United Nations that is concerned with international public health, health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
Thus, health is a dynamic concept that refers to an individual’s physical, mental and social tendencies, as well as their ability to manage and adapt these dimensions throughout life as necessary.
Based on your current life habits, you will have different goals and priorities than somebody else. For example, some people need to follow a heart-healthy diet. Others may be more focused on following a low cholesterol diet and preventing high blood pressure.
Health in the United States
Health is a real issue for Americans. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. health expenditures in 2016 were about $3.3 trillion. Yet, according to Medical News Today, Americans die at a younger age and experience higher rates of chronic diseases.
Factors that Affect Health Status
Several factors that affect health according to the WHO are:
- relationships, like those with your family and friends
- education level
- where you live
- the nature of the environment that surrounds you
All of these factors essentially boil down to three major categories: your social/economic environment, your physical environment, and your personal behaviors and characteristics. So, since these factors vary from person to person, there is no single recipe as to how to be health.
